From Only Child to Big Brother: Bruno’s Tale of Tolerance, Treats, and a Frenchie Named Louie
Bruno had it made.
Only child. King of the couch. Ruler of the backyard. Napper of naps. For a while, it was just him and the humans—peaceful, predictable, perfect.
But one day, a squishy little Frenchie potato named Louie showed up. And just like that… Bruno’s world flipped.

We brought Louie home in January 2021 thinking Bruno was lonely while we were at work. We imagined the two of them becoming instant besties, partners in crime, snuggle buddies. Turns out… Bruno had other plans.
At the time, Louie was just 6 months old—full of energy and affection—and Bruno was 4 years and 3 months old. The perfect age for a moody big brother.
At first, he wasn’t a fan. Louie was your classic Frenchie puppy—endless energy, clumsy joy, and the overwhelming desire to play with everyone, especially Bruno. But Bruno? Not impressed. He would snap if Louie got too close, walk away when he tried to cuddle, and give us the deepest sighs like, “Seriously, you brought this home?”
But Louie, sweet persistent Louie, never gave up.
Louie just wanted to be loved—and maybe lick Bruno’s face. He’s a deeply affectionate pup, like most Frenchies are with their humans. But because he was raised closely with his mom for his first six months, Louie was also looking for that bond with another dog. He didn’t just want affection from us—he wanted it from Bruno, too.
Every night, Louie would try to climb into bed with Bruno. And every night, Bruno would snap at him, huff loudly, and leave to go find another bed. Louie would just stand there for a moment, looking heartbroken, then either retreat to his own bed or come over to me with the saddest little face—like he was saying, “I was just trying to love him.”
But Louie kept trying. Quietly. Gently. Relentlessly.
And eventually… he won.
Bruno realized Louie wasn’t going anywhere. If Mom and Dad liked this needy little potato, he may as well give in. Now? Bruno still acts like the aloof big brother, but he’s the first to instigate zoomies, the first to steal Louie’s treats, and the last to ever get a dog bed to himself for long.
They share space. They share naps. They share us.
They are brothers.
And just like that, the Frenchie Chronicles were born. 🐾
