A Morning Walk: Sunshine, Frenchies, and a Fresh Start

It’s summertime here on the Gulf Coast, and even though it’s only May, we’ve already had some record-breaking heat. For two weeks, it’s been nothing but historical highs and those ultra UV warning days — the kind where it feels like you need oven mitts just to open the car door. If I want to get outside, I either have to go early in the morning or hope it’s a pool bar day.

Finally, we got a break in the heat. The past few days have been full of storms — the kind that rattle the windows and make the Frenchies (Bruno and Louie) stare at me like, “Is it safe out there?” But the storms brought in a bit of cooler weather, and by cooler, I mean 80s instead of 100! I’ll take it.

This morning, I finally got outside for a walk. I even took Bruno and Louie along for a short stroll to get them some fresh air. Walking has been such a lifeline for my mental health since losing my job. I’ve always been someone who thrives on structure, and without work to anchor my days, I’ve found it hard to build a routine. Starting my day with a long walk helps set a positive tone, gives me a dose of sunshine and Vitamin D, and clears my head to think about what I want to accomplish.

I’m learning that even small habits like this can make a big difference in how I feel. For me, it’s about taking it one step at a time — literally.
